About the position

Day Zero Diagnostics (DZD) is seeking a Laboratory Technician II to support the Sequencing Technologies team. This role involves high-throughput sample processing, DNA library preparation, quality control assessments, and whole-genome sequencing on both short- and long-read platforms. The technician will work in a state-of-the-art facility, contributing to the mission of modernizing infectious disease diagnostics and treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform DNA library preparation, QC assessments including TapeStation and fluorescent quantitation assays, and WGS for diagnostic workflows on short-read and long-read sequencing platforms with minimal guidance.
  • Execute repetitive NGS workflows and strictly follow SOPs for specimen handling, processing, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and integrate NGS workflows into broader research initiatives.
  • Identify risks/issues that may adversely affect test performance and notify the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation on sample processing and tracking, QC checkpoints, and any corrective actions taken when tests deviate from the laboratory's established SOPs.
  • Train/mentor wet-lab team members, provide guidance on SOPs, techniques and workflow improvements.
  • Conduct routine maintenance of instruments, manage inventory, and order essential reagents and consumables.
  • Prepare and communicate SOPs, data summaries, technical reports, and presentations for internal use.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution, or a 4 year medical or biotechnology degree, is required to fulfill CLIA requirements.
  • 1-2 years of wet lab experience in academic and/or industry setting.
  • Experience with laboratory methods/techniques associated with NGS pipelines, including Illumina-based DNA library construction, QC, and sequencing.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and high volumes of sample processing.
  • Properly use and maintain standard laboratory equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with long-read sequencing technologies, including ONT, is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in nucleic acids extraction, quantitation, gel electrophoresis, PCRs, and related techniques is desired.
  • Experience with liquid handling and automated NGS pipelines is desired.
  • Clinical laboratory testing experience is desired.
