About the position

The Junior Laboratory Technician at SGS North America Inc. is responsible for performing routine laboratory tests to determine the chemical and physical characteristics of various materials. This role involves following standard operating procedures, preparing samples, conducting quality control checks, and maintaining a clean and organized laboratory environment. The technician works under immediate supervision and is expected to adhere to safety protocols while contributing to quality control and product development efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine laboratory testing following the company's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and methods.
  • Prepare representative subsamples from client samples using defined methods.
  • Weigh and digest samples for analysis using relevant equipment.
  • Complete and maintain laboratory reports.
  • Receive, sort, and log client samples into the database, and prepare sample labels.
  • Archive, return, or dispose of client samples as per established procedures.
  • Prepare monthly composites.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly Quality Assurance/Quality Control checks on equipment.
  • Demonstrate good and safe work habits and enforce a clean working environment.
  • Perform general upkeep and housekeeping of the laboratory.
  • Ensure all equipment and containers are organized and cleaned before and after use.
  • Ensure all personal protective equipment (PPE) relevant for tasks is worn as required.
  • Ensure compliance with all required local and federal safety processes and procedures.
  • May have preparation or field responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Adhere to internal standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (Required)
  • No experience required, unless required by state law
  • Post-secondary degree in science or minimum 1 year supervised water testing experience where required by state law (Required)
  • A valid and current Driver's license may be required if the role requires driving a company vehicle (Required)
  • Must obtain 24-hour surface Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) certificate, training is available through SGS (Required)
  • Intermediate English language skills (Required)
  • Basic mathematical skills (Required)
  • Intermediate reasoning skills/abilities (Required)
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing or verbally (Required)
  • Ability to follow directions ensuring accurate and timely results (Required)
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations (Required)
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals (Required)
  • Ability to work independently and under moderate supervision (Required)
  • Team player attitude with a customer care focus (Required)
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel) (Preferred)
