About the position

The Laboratory Technician (Part-Time) at Sinclair Community College provides essential technical support for the Advanced Manufacturing Department, ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of various laboratories, including Precision Machining, CNC, Welding, and Metrology. This role involves assisting students and faculty, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a safe and productive learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in repair, service and provide preventative maintenance for the machine tools and all other equipment in all labs assigned.
  • Maintain accurate records of repair and maintenance activities.
  • Order and maintain tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Provide operation instructions to students during classes and open laboratory sessions as assigned.
  • Order and prepare materials for student projects.
  • Assist in the development and set up of instructional equipment as requested.
  • Maintain a safe environment in the machine lab by complying with SCC, HazMat and OSHA regulations.
  • Machine, fabricate and repair items as requested in support of other departments.
  • Demonstrate machines and projects for visitors, faculty and prospective students.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness in the laboratory.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or as the need is apparent.

Requirements

  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in advanced manufacturing in all facets of precision machining, or an associate degree accompanied by 3 years' experience in operating and maintaining machine shop equipment.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of all machine tools used in the laboratory, including mills, lathes, surface grinders, drill presses, bench grinders and high level CNC machines.
  • Experience in the safe operation, set-up and basic programming of CNC vertical machining and turning centers.
  • Familiarity with HAAS machinery and controls preferred but not necessary.
  • Familiarity with HAAS UMC 500 machining centers and ST-20Y lathes a plus.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software experience a plus.
  • Proficient in the interpretation of engineering drawings.
  • Proficient in quality measurement techniques.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of shop floor programming both ProtoTRAK and G & M codes.
  • Proficient in PC operations and MS Office 360 programs.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of shop floor safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate initiative and self-direction.
  • Good report writing and presentation skills.
  • Excellent people skills to work directly with students, faculty, technicians, employers, visitors, and other community members.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with HAAS machinery and controls.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software.
