About the position

The Laboratory Technician role at Actalent involves managing and operating poultry housing facilities, ensuring the health and well-being of the birds, and maintaining biosecurity protocols. The position requires monitoring bird health, administering necessary treatments, and collaborating with farm workers to optimize production and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the health and well-being of poultry, observing for signs of illness or distress.
  • Administer vaccinations and medications as necessary and according to veterinary instructions.
  • Conduct feeding and watering routines to ensure proper nutrition and hydration levels.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of poultry houses to promote a healthy environment.
  • Ensure proper ventilation, temperature, and humidity levels in the housing facilities.
  • Perform regular maintenance checks on equipment such as feed lines, drinkers, heaters, and ventilation systems.
  • Implement and enforce biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Monitor and control access to poultry areas to maintain secure environments.
  • Keep accurate records of bird health, production rates, feed consumption, and any treatments administered.
  • Report any abnormalities or concerns to the Farm Manager/Supervisor promptly.
  • Assist in the harvesting processes, ensuring humane treatment during capture and transport.
  • Support processing activities as needed, following safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Work closely with other farm workers to ensure seamless operation.
  • Participate in training sessions as needed to improve skills and knowledge.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in agriculture, animal science, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in poultry farming or animal husbandry is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of poultry nutrition, health, and management practices.
  • Ability to operate farm equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of care.
  • Basic computer skills for record-keeping and reporting.
  • Physical stamina to handle manual labor and long hours in the poultry house environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Additional education in agriculture, animal science, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in poultry farming or animal husbandry.
