About the position

The Laboratory Technician will support the Laboratory of Malaria Immunology and Vaccinology (LMIV) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). This role involves conducting complex experimental procedures in microbiology, biochemistry, and immunology, contributing to the research and development of malaria vaccines.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with complex experimental procedures involving microbiology, biomedical engineering, biochemistry, and immunology techniques.
  • Conduct research involving cell culture, protein purification, and maintenance of cell stocks.
  • Develop scalable fermentation and purification processes for recombinant malaria vaccines.
  • Analyze recombinant protein production quality and quantity after fermentation and purification.
  • Collect and organize data, perform data analysis, and prepare technical reports and summaries.
  • Write reports of findings for publishable manuscripts, detailing methods, results, and discussions.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment, ensuring proper upkeep and routine maintenance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biology, molecular biology or related field with two or more years of related experience, or a MS in a similar field with limited experience.
  • Experience preparing laboratory protocols.
  • Experience in protein conjugation.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and graphics programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with vaccine research and development.
  • Experience using fermenters, AKTA chromatography skids, shaking incubators, or equivalent equipment.
  • Knowledge of current Good Laboratory Practices and current Good Manufacturing Practices.
