About the position
The Maintenance of Traffic Laborer plays a crucial role in ensuring safe traffic control during roadway construction projects. This position involves directing motorists, setting up traffic control devices, and maintaining a safe work environment under the guidance of a traffic control foreman. The laborer is responsible for various tasks that require physical stamina and the ability to work in varying weather conditions.
Responsibilities
- Direct motorists and flag traffic as needed during road paving operations.
- Set up and maintain traffic control devices according to the traffic control plan.
- Monitor lane closures and ensure traffic cones and barricades are upright and in place.
- Place or remove plastic traffic cones weighing 10-12 lbs from a slow-moving vehicle.
- Lift and position barricades or signs weighing 25-50 lbs from a truck or trailer.
- Communicate with dump truck operators to receive load tickets and provide directions to dump areas.
- Perform various traffic control tasks for a 10-hour shift, adapting to physical limitations as necessary.
Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods and flag traffic using a STOP/SLOW paddle or flag.
- Physical capability to lift and move traffic control devices weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to walk, bend, and perform dynamic lifting actions while working in a construction zone.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
