About the position

The Laborer (Motor Vehicle Operating) position at the Department of the Interior involves performing various labor-intensive tasks, including operating heavy power equipment and vehicles, loading and unloading materials, and maintaining park facilities. This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 1039 hours, with positions available in multiple locations including Acadia National Park, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, and Fire Island National Seashore. The role requires physical fitness and the ability to work under various weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, and brush cutters.
  • Load and unload supplies and materials from trucks and trailers.
  • Dig ditches and trenches, and perform minor road repairs.
  • Perform janitorial duties for buildings and grounds as required.
  • Operate vehicles in all traffic conditions and perform minor operator maintenance.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Valid driver's license required for operating government vehicles.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing over 50 pounds.
  • Must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old with specific educational qualifications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience operating power equipment and hand tools.
