About the position

The Labs FSP Scientist - Protein Biochemistry role at Thermo Fisher Scientific involves working within the Analytical Services team to support the development of life-changing therapies through protein biochemistry. The position focuses on maintaining cell cultures, performing protein expression and purification, and conducting biochemical experiments to characterize proteins. This role is integral to the company's mission of enabling customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain insect and mammalian cell cultures, perform cell transfections for recombinant protein expression.
  • Contribute to the design of new constructs and mutants based on structural analysis.
  • Work closely with the protein production and biophysics teams to select the best constructs and conditions for structural and animal studies.
  • Carry out protein purification tasks as required by the project to generate structural reagents.
  • Perform biochemical and biophysical experiments to characterize the purified proteins.
  • Document work and ensure appropriate quality control experiments are carried out to support intellectual property and reagent reuse by other groups.
  • Present results and progress updates at team meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in lab sciences such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Immunology, Biology, Molecular Biology or similar.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • 1+ year's hands-on experience in protein expression and purification in a research lab or biological manufacturing facility is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with common lab techniques including liquid chromatography (SEC, ion-exchange, affinity columns), SDS-PAGE, and western blot.
  • Computer skills in Windows operating system and common office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in molecular biology techniques, cloning, PCR, Gel electrophoresis.
  • Knowledge of biophysical techniques for characterization of antibody-antigen complexes such as Mass Photometry/Spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Fluorimetry (DSF), HPLC, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC), Bio-Layer Interferometry (BLI), and Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR).
  • Ability to efficiently manage uncertainty, changes in priority, and timeline restrictions.
