About the position

The Land Conservation Steward is a vital role within The Nature Conservancy's Florida Chapter, focusing on implementing and managing field conservation work across Florida. This position is responsible for land management efforts, including controlling non-native plant species, participating in prescribed fire management, and assisting with general stewardship activities. The Steward will work closely with conservation partners and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations while contributing to the preservation of Florida's natural ecosystems.

Responsibilities

  • Control and monitor non-native plant species.
  • Participate in prescribed fire management activities.
  • Assist with fleet, facilities, tool, and equipment maintenance.
  • Support road and trail maintenance efforts.
  • Improve habitats for Red Cockaded Woodpecker and Florida Scrub Jay.
  • Conduct wildlife monitoring and support preserve outreach events.
  • Host volunteer workdays and assist with general stewardship activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and 1 year's training in a science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment safely and efficiently (e.g., lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g., First Aid, CPR).
  • Must meet minimum TNC - National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) qualifications for Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2).
  • Ability to walk 3 miles with a 45-pound pack vest in 45 minutes or less.

Nice-to-haves

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience.
  • Bachelor's degree and 1 - 2 years' experience in natural resource management or related field.
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) qualification for single resource boss.
  • Completion of S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaws.
  • Experience using GPS hardware and ArcGIS applications.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation and land management.
