About the position

VHB's Maine team is seeking an experienced Site/Civil Engineer to support our land development projects. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join a growing team of civil engineers in southern Maine managing the design of ski resort improvements, national park projects, local urban re-development projects, transit-oriented development, and federal, state, and local (City/Town) projects throughout Maine. Our Maine Land Development team is looking for a Project Engineer that is passionate about contributing to and leading the delivery of these fun and unique projects. The role involves mentoring junior team members, providing technical guidance, and serving as project manager for moderately complex projects. The successful candidate will also participate in new business development, manage client relationships, and ensure that all project deliverables meet the required scope, schedule, cost, and quality standards. In addition to technical responsibilities, the position requires participation in the proposal process, preparation of design and permitting documents, and attendance at meetings with clients and regulatory agencies. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of civil engineering concepts and practices, as well as in-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing site design. Strong project management skills, excellent communication abilities, and a collaborative mindset are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Mentors junior team members and provides technical guidance.
  • Serves as project manager for moderately complex projects.
  • Participates in new business development and manages client relationships.
  • Participates in the proposal process and develops plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Ensures production of drawings, specifications, and reports meet scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements.
  • Manages and supports the preparation of design and permitting documents.
  • Attends meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to discuss design and permitting issues.
  • Consults with construction personnel regarding design constructability and scheduling of construction activities.
  • Participates in professional and personal development aligned with career goals.
  • Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable regulations and company policies.

Requirements

  • 5-8 years of professional land development engineering experience, depending on level of education.
  • BS in Civil Engineering or related degree (a Masters degree may be substituted for 1 year of experience).
  • EIT required, PE licensure in ME strongly preferred.
  • Proficient in site layout, grading, utility design, and stormwater management.
  • Extensive knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures in civil engineering.
  • In-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing site design.
  • Robust technical and critical thinking skills.
  • Highly skilled in industry standard engineering design and analysis systems (e.g., CAD, GIS, stormwater hydrology and hydraulics, traffic simulation).
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite.
