About the position
GPI is seeking Land Surveying Interns for its offices in Buffalo, Rochester, and Jamestown, NY. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in a collaborative work environment while assisting with various surveying tasks. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic and a passion for providing technical support as part of a team in a well-established engineering firm specializing in infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Assisting the field crew with all aspects of the daily crew workload
- Assisting the office survey team with various land surveying tasks including AutoCAD Civil 3D survey drafting, project research, reducing field data, performing calculations, etc.
- Following instructions and work orders from project managers
- Ensuring that vehicles are supplied and kept in an orderly fashion, ready for duty, and caring for equipment
- Operating basic surveying hand tools and equipment
- Learning the basic operation procedures of land survey and remote sensing equipment
- Safely traversing and navigating rugged terrain
- Regularly working outside in all weather conditions
Requirements
- Must be a student pursuing a degree in engineering or a Certificate in Survey Engineering Technology
- Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration
- Read, write, and understand plans and directions given in the English language
- Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members
- Able to stand for approximately 3 hours minimum a day up to 8 hours
- Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.)
- Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working
- Able to move equipment or inspection specimens weighing up to 50 pounds
Nice-to-haves
- Surveying experience is a plus
- Good communicator, energetic, and able to work in the office to obtain the full experience of working alongside our engineering staff
