About the position

As a Landfill Civil and Environmental Project Engineer at Waste Management, you will play a crucial role in the management and oversight of landfill operations and environmental compliance. This position is designed for individuals who possess a blend of ambition, curiosity, and technical engineering skills. You will be mentored by experienced technical staff and managers, allowing you to apply your education and experience to various assignments. Your work will expand your understanding of waste management processes, including landfill operations, regulatory permitting and compliance, construction, and environmental management systems. The role is diverse and requires creativity and active participation in multiple business functions such as project planning and budgeting, accounting, contract negotiations, regulatory interaction, construction oversight, and operations. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of all permits governing the construction and operation of landfill disposal sites and other operations, such as waste transfer stations and material recovery facilities. In this position, you will procure and direct professional consulting firms to prepare regulatory documents, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements and consistency with site conditions and operations. You will work closely with senior engineers on construction projects, taking responsibility for tasks assigned by the lead engineer, including contract administration, materials ordering, contractor scheduling, and oversight of construction quality assurance. Additionally, you will collaborate with operational teams to ensure compliance with permits and assist in the preparation and review of engineering, monitoring, and environmental reports. Your role will also involve interacting with state and local agencies to foster positive working relationships and ensure efficient compliance with regulations. You will participate in continuing education opportunities to maintain and enhance your skills, integrating new knowledge and technologies into Waste Management operations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of all permits governing the construction and operation of landfill disposal sites and other operations.
  • Procure and direct professional consulting firms engaged in preparing regulatory documents, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Assist senior engineers on construction projects, taking responsibility for tasks such as contract administration and contractor scheduling.
  • Work with operation teams to ensure compliance with permits and resolve operational issues.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of engineering, monitoring, and environmental reports.
  • Conduct environmental reviews and audits.
  • Collaborate with landfill managers to formulate short-term and long-term goals and action plans.
  • Identify and estimate site capital needs and include them in annual budget exercises.
  • Interact with state and local agencies to foster positive working relationships and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Review and implement WM engineering and technical directives and Best Management Practices at assigned sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (accredited).
  • Three years of previous experience in an engineering, technical, or environmental field.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and interpret data, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret contracts, regulations, permit documents, and procedural manuals.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and directions with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Environmental and/or Civil Engineering.
  • Project Management experience.
