About the position

The Lands and Minerals Legal Unit Supervisor is responsible for providing supervisory direction, training, and quality assurance to attorneys within the Legal Unit of the Division of Lands and Minerals at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. This role involves overseeing legal services related to real estate and minerals, ensuring compliance with labor agreements, and participating in the development of division policies. The position also includes advising on legal issues affecting division plans and managing the provision of legal services for state minerals leasing and real estate projects.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Division of Lands and Minerals Legal Unit to ensure effective performance of assigned job duties.
  • Serve on the division manager/supervisor team to develop policies and plans consistent with law and natural resource management.
  • Direct and participate in the provision of legal services for state minerals leasing and other minerals work.
  • Determine work priorities and review project statuses with employees.
  • Direct and participate in the provision of legal services for real estate projects and programs.
  • Provide advice and input on legal issues affecting division plans and policies.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Minnesota.
  • Three years of experience in the practice of law with knowledge of minerals, leasing, land acquisition, and real estate law.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in supervising professional staff or significant legal projects.
  • Legal drafting skills sufficient to draft complex contracts and legislative amendments.
  • Legal analysis skills to comprehend case law, statutes, and regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • One or more years of professional staff supervisory experience.
  • Four or more years of experience in the practice of law with working knowledge of minerals, leasing, and real estate law.
  • Experience in drafting legal opinions and testifying on legislation.
