About the position

The Lands Program Forester / NR Forestry Specialist Senior position at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources involves managing and implementing major forestry programs at the Area administrative level. This role includes providing wildfire protection services, advising on resource management for non-industrial private lands, and leading field assignments. The position emphasizes sustainable forest management and requires strong leadership and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and administer Forestry programs at the Area administrative level to ensure effective implementation and adherence to policies.
  • Provide wildfire protection services for the Lewiston Area and maintain fire equipment.
  • Advise on resource management recommendations for non-industrial private lands in Fillmore County.
  • Implement field assignments under the guidance of area program foresters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Forest Science/Management or a closely related field from an accredited program.
  • Two years of intermediate professional forestry experience or three years of entry-level professional forestry experience.
  • Knowledge of forest management theory and techniques for planning and organizing management activities.
  • Understanding of division policies and procedures governing program activities.
  • Knowledge of state policies for contract administration and technical specifications writing.
  • Leadership skills to motivate personnel and obtain program commitment.
  • Human relations skills for staff management and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly in verbal and written formats.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in timber sale administration.
  • Qualified as Fire Fighter Type 1 (FFT1) / Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT 5).
  • Certified Forest Officer status.
  • Background or coursework in soil science, forest soils, or hydrology.
  • Experience with major field operations programs in the Division of Forestry.
  • Completion of a Leadership Development Program.
  • Experience using ESRI products.
  • Knowledge of water quality BMPs and Forest Management Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of wetland classification and/or delineation.
