About the position

The Landscape Architect, Project Planning, plays a crucial role in the master planning, site planning, and project planning processes at all levels, from project definition through design and landscape architecture to facility demolitions. This position is responsible for assisting in the evaluation and establishment of campus standards for project definition, planning, design, and methods of project delivery. The Landscape Architect will engage in various planning efforts, including site selection and the development of policies and procedures for landscape utilization. In this role, the Landscape Architect will assist campus clients in identifying their needs for new projects, renovations, or site work. They will coordinate the scope of work and program statements based on client and campus needs, determining the feasibility and conceptualization of projects. Additionally, the Landscape Architect will compile and reconcile project budgets with input from all relevant parties, ensuring that financial resources are effectively managed throughout the project lifecycle. The position also involves participating in the design of landscapes and site plans, providing design assistance and interpretation to clients, and acting as a consultant to Project Management for landscape design issues. Field inspections will be conducted to supervise the layout and quality of site construction and landscape improvements. The Landscape Architect will collaborate with the Campus Landscape Architect to advise supervisory personnel on minor improvements and maintenance practices. Furthermore, they will assist in preparing the scope of professional services required for each project and attend planning meetings as the campus representative. The role requires the development of periodic status reports and support for various presentation materials for the Planning Department staff. Overall, the Landscape Architect, Project Planning, is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, and Guiding Principles of Facilities & Services while fulfilling other duties as assigned by the Associate Director for Project Planning.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in master planning efforts
  • Participates in site selection, utilization policies and procedures
  • Participates in establishing the objectives for development and maintenance of campus landscapes
  • Assists campus clients in determining needs for new projects, renovations, or site work projects
  • Coordinates scope of work and program statements for projects based on client and campus needs
  • Coordinates and determines the scope, feasibility, or conceptualization of projects
  • Compiles and reconciles project budgets with input from all pertinent parties for projects and demolition projects
  • Participates in the design of landscapes and site plans
  • Assists F&S Engineering with Document Reviews for site items
  • Provides design assistance and interpretation to clients to help them understand design drawings
  • Acts as a consultant to Project Management for landscape design issues throughout the project duration
  • Conducts field inspections and provides supervision for layout and quality of site construction and landscape improvements
  • Coordinates with the Campus Landscape Architect on advising supervisory personnel on minor improvements, replacements, and maintenance practices
  • Assists in the preparation of the scope of professional services required for each project
  • Attends planning meetings as the campus representative on assigned projects through Design Development
  • Develops periodic status reports for assigned projects
  • Provides support for written, graphic, and computer presentation materials for various members of the Planning Department staff
  • Participates in the process for the selection of professional services consultants
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Director for Project Planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture
  • Current Professional Registration as a Landscape Architect in Illinois or ability to be registered within 6 months of hire
  • Three years of progressively responsible administrative experience in landscape architecture and facility planning and management
