About the position

The Landscape Architect, Project Planning, plays a crucial role in the Facilities & Services Planning Division, primarily responsible for master planning, site planning, and project planning at all levels. This includes overseeing projects from their initial definition through to design, landscape architecture, and facility demolitions, as well as fulfilling various professional responsibilities as assigned. The position requires active participation in the evaluation and establishment of campus standards for project definition, planning, design, and methods of project delivery. In this role, the Landscape Architect will engage in master planning efforts, site selection, and the development of policies and procedures for land utilization. They will work closely with campus clients to assess their needs for new projects, renovations, or site work, coordinating the scope of work and program statements based on client and campus requirements. The Landscape Architect will also be responsible for determining the feasibility and conceptualization of projects, compiling and reconciling project budgets with input from relevant stakeholders, and participating in the design of landscapes and site plans. Additionally, the Landscape Architect will assist the Facilities & Services Engineering team with document reviews for site items, provide design assistance to clients, and act as a consultant to Project Management regarding landscape design issues throughout the project lifecycle. Field inspections will be conducted to supervise the layout and quality of site construction and landscape improvements. The role also involves advising Grounds Maintenance Crews on minor improvements and maintenance practices, preparing scopes of professional services for projects, attending planning meetings, and developing periodic status reports for assigned projects. The Landscape Architect will support the mission, vision, values, and guiding principles of Facilities & Services throughout their work.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in master planning efforts.
  • Participates in site selection, utilization policies and procedures.
  • Participates in establishing the objectives for development and maintenance of campus landscapes.
  • Assists campus clients in determining needs for new projects, renovations, or site work projects.
  • Coordinates scope of work and program statements for projects based on client and campus needs.
  • Determines, compiles, and reconciles project budgets with input from all pertinent parties for projects.
  • Participates in the design of landscapes and site plans.
  • Assists F&S Engineering with document reviews for site items.
  • Provides design assistance and interpretation to clients to help them understand design drawings.
  • Acts as a consultant to Project Management for landscape design issues throughout the project duration.
  • Conducts field inspections and provides supervision for layout and quality of site construction and landscape improvements.
  • Coordinates with the Campus Landscape Architect on advising supervisory personnel on minor improvements, replacements, and maintenance practices.
  • Assists in the preparation of the scope of professional services required for each project.
  • Attends planning meetings as the campus representative on assigned projects through Design Development.
  • Develops periodic status reports for assigned projects.
  • Provides support for written, graphic, and computer presentation materials for various members of the Planning Department staff.
  • Participates in the process for the selection of professional services consultants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture.
  • Current Professional Registration as a Landscape Architect in the state of Illinois or the ability to be registered within 6 months of hire.
  • Three years of progressively responsible administrative experience in landscape architecture and facility planning and management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Landscape Architecture.

  • Hourly pay starting at $40.00, increasing based on level of work.
