About the position

The Landscape Operations Manager at Bard College is responsible for directing and leading the Grounds and Horticulture staff in daily operations. This role is crucial for maintaining a well-kept campus landscape, which is essential for student recruitment, retention, and overall enjoyment of the college environment. The manager will oversee various landscaping tasks, ensure efficient operations, and maintain high standards of productivity and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and train the Grounds and Horticulture staff, organizing work schedules and work orders.
  • Direct campus-wide horticultural design, landscape planning, installation, and maintenance.
  • Manage tree work, landscaping in formal and informal garden beds, greenhouses, leaf and snow removal, outdoor event preparation, and plant health care.
  • Oversee campus landscape, lawn care, excavation, maintenance of roads and sidewalks, and parking areas; manage trash/recycling removal and event setups.
  • Accountable for efficiency and productivity standards as established by the College, performing duties diligently and professionally.
  • Assist other trades supervisors and managers for the harmonious completion of specific assignments.
  • Identify deficiencies and unsafe conditions in campus systems, ensuring safe and professional work practices.
  • Maintain plant records and purchase orders for materials required for the Grounds and Horticulture Departments.
  • Manage all aspects of the historic landscape.
  • Hire and oversee subcontractors, coordinating with other trade managers and professionals on new construction and maintenance.
  • Work from blueprints, plans, and sketches.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of professional landscape management experience; college degree/certificate in a related field preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of verifiable experience as a Landscape Operations Manager or in a related field.
  • Verifiable professional work experience in grounds work, pesticide application, and safety practices.
  • Must have a valid NY State driver's license and complete a college-sponsored defensive driver's course.
  • Must maintain immunizations as required by the College.
