About the position

The position involves providing interpreting services in a culturally sensitive manner to facilitate communication between speakers of different languages at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). The role includes translating medical instructions, medication schedules, and hospital-related correspondence, while collaborating with healthcare team members to ensure effective patient care. The interpreter will also assist in training new staff interpreters.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting services to facilitate communication between patients and healthcare providers.
  • Translate medical instructions and medication schedules for patients and families.
  • Assist in the translation of hospital-related administrative correspondence.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members in the delivery of care.
  • Comply with hospital policies regarding patient confidentiality and informed consent.
  • Assist in the training and orientation of new staff interpreters.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in Spanish is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience interpreting and translating in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience working with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Competency in written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to translate and interpret medical terminology.
  • Experience interpreting and translating with patients at various developmental and educational levels.
  • Completion of a minimum of 40-hour Healthcare Interpreter training.
  • Healthcare Interpreter National Certification or equivalent credentialing (where applicable).
  • Translator Certification (where applicable by language) through ATA.
  • 85%-90% Score for Language Proficiency from a vendor selected by CHLA.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related discipline preferred.
