About the position
The Language Access Coordinator at Dayton Children's is responsible for ensuring that the needs of patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) and deaf patients are met in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory guidelines. This role emphasizes strong communication skills and cultural competency to effectively serve diverse patient populations. The coordinator will prioritize in-person interpreting for outpatient appointments and manage interpretive needs in inpatient and emergency settings, while also working to improve the internal interpreter services program.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the needs of limited English proficiency patients and deaf patients are met according to hospital policy and regulatory guidelines.
- Prioritize in-person interpreting for outpatient clinic appointments.
- Cover inpatient and emergency department interpretive needs as required.
- Assist in managing the hospital process for providing language services.
- Develop strategies for improving the internal interpreter services program.
- Monitor trends and improve resources and communication for LEP patients and families.
Requirements
- 2 years of interpreting experience required.
- 1 year of medical interpreting experience preferred.
- 1-3 years of healthcare experience preferred.
- Completion of Language Proficiency test and an Interpreter Skills Assessment required.
- Completion of a Medical Interpreter 40-hour training course within 30 days of hire required.
Nice-to-haves
- Associates degree preferred.
- Preferred languages include Spanish, Haitian Creole, Kinyarwanda, or Swahili.
