About the position

The Language Engineer position within Amazon's Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Data Services organization focuses on dataset construction, linguistic annotation, and the automatic processing of large datasets. This role is pivotal in advancing natural language processing and machine learning, requiring collaboration with cross-functional teams to align AI systems with human policies and preferences.

Responsibilities

  • Design data collection/creation tasks in response to science needs, including authoring instructions and defining quality targets.
  • Analyze and extract language-related insights from large datasets.
  • Build tools or prototypes for data analysis or authoring using Python or other scripting languages.
  • Use modeling tools to bootstrap or test new functionalities.
  • Collaborate with scientists and software engineers to evaluate the performance of language models.
  • Handle competing requests from various data customers.

Requirements

  • Master's or higher degree in a relevant field (computational linguistics or equivalent).
  • 2+ years of experience in computational linguistics or language data processing.
  • Experience with language annotation and data markup.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages, particularly Python.
  • Experience working with speech and text language data in multiple languages.
  • Excellent communication and strong organizational skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, dynamic environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in Computational Linguistics or equivalent field with computational emphasis.
  • Expertise in bootstrapping language data collections in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Experience in writing grammars and building finite state transducers (FSTs).
  • Experience with statistical language modeling.
  • Practical knowledge of version control and agile development.
  • Familiarity with database queries and data analysis processes (SQL, R, Matlab, etc.).
  • Willingness to support multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to reprioritization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
