About the position

The Language Interpreter II position at UT Southwestern is a per diem role responsible for providing accurate interpretation and translation of healthcare information for Spanish-speaking patients and their families. The interpreter will work under the supervision of the Language Services Department, ensuring effective communication between patients and healthcare staff. This role requires maintaining records of interpreting sessions and supporting written translations as needed, with an expectation to achieve national certification within the first 18 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately interpret medical and healthcare information from healthcare staff to patients and vice versa.
  • Translate consent forms, discharge orders, and teaching protocols from English to the target language.
  • Assist in obtaining patient/family signatures where appropriate.
  • Provide information regarding cultural issues/needs of limited English proficient patients to hospital staff.
  • Document all daily patient sessions in EPIC accurately and timely.
  • Maintain an accurate list of interpretation sessions using the RedCap application in Epic.
  • Demonstrate patient-centered behaviors and respond quickly to calls for services.
  • Assist with departmental activities and projects as requested.
  • Assume the Team Lead role as needed to support departmental operations.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree required with four years of job-related experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • 2 years of interpretation experience with medical terminology and excellent customer service skills.
  • Fluency in English and the target language, both written and spoken.
  • Must obtain the Medical Interpreter National Certification within the first 18 months of employment.

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Medical Interpreter National Certification by an NCCA accredited organization upon hire.
