About the position

The Laser Application Engineer at Alabama Specialty Products is responsible for applying mechanical and laser optics engineering principles to develop effective solutions for product and process development in laser welding, cladding, marking, and metal deposition. This role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to implement laser-related projects, focusing on developing tools, integrating machinery, and utilizing computer-integrated technologies to guide product development.

Responsibilities

  • Develop processes for prototype laser welding and cladding projects.
  • Develop manufacturing processes by studying product requirements and modifying equipment.
  • Confer with planning and design staff concerning product design and tooling for efficient production methods.
  • Develop jigs and fixtures and research tooling needs for efficient manufacturing and machining.
  • Establish procedures to guide production and cladding personnel related to specification restrictions and material processes.
  • Assure product and process quality by designing testing methods and establishing standards.
  • Monitor manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and quality, and reduce losses.
  • Learn to set up, program, and operate production equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain communication with sales/internal customers regarding product performance and specifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering technology or engineering.
  • 2 years' experience in laser processing and laser metal deposition process development.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM Design software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ANSI, NFPA 79, and Automotive design standards.
  • Knowledge of AWS codes and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code-ASME Section IX.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, industrial engineering or related field.
  • Registration as a professional engineer in manufacturing, mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • Certificates of membership to the Laser Institute of America, American Welding Society.
  • Certificate in Tru Tops Programming.
  • Certificates in PTC Creo, Pro/E or Wildfire.
