About the position

The Ashland Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for future lateral Police Officer vacancies. The purpose of this position is to protect life and property, maintain public safety, and deter crime by enforcing local, state, and traffic laws. Officers will respond to calls for service, assist medical units, mediate civil conflicts, and educate the community on crime prevention and personal protection. Responsibilities include arresting, warning, or citing violators, coordinating with other departments and agencies, preparing written documentation of incidents, and testifying in court.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to calls, including major crimes, civil complaints, thefts, assaults, family disputes, etc., and take appropriate actions.
  • Direct road traffic at accident/crime scenes as necessary.
  • Perform CPR and first aid as needed.
  • Prepare written records and reports necessary for investigations, crime prevention, prosecution, and administration.
  • Conduct investigations and interrogations, obtain evidence, interview victims and witnesses, compile information, and prepare cases for filing of charges.
  • Testify in court as necessary.
  • Perform various crime prevention activities, including dissemination of information to the general public, surveillance patrols, coordination with other departments and agencies.
  • Patrol streets, businesses, and residential areas to enforce traffic and criminal laws.
  • Issue warnings or citations for violations.
  • Perform security checks for suspicious persons or vehicles.
  • Provide citizen assistance regarding stalled vehicles, crime prevention, drug resistance, traffic safety, etc.
  • Make arrests, search, and transport prisoners.
  • Maintain satisfactory working relationships with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Participate in the department's fitness program per the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Assist and support team performance and work cooperatively with other team members.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent plus completion of 60 college semester hours or 90 college quarter hours at an accredited college or university.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain and retain, an Oregon Driver's License with an acceptable driving record at the time of employment or within 1 month of hire date.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical and psychological examination and undergo in-depth background investigation prior to appointment.
  • Must be of good moral character and integrity.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of four-year university education in criminology or related field.
  • Three years of community service or honorable military experience may substitute for college.

Benefits

  • Incentive pay for DPSST Certification: 7% for Intermediate; 12% for Advanced.
  • Longevity pay: 3% for 10 years of service; 6% for 15 years of service; 9% for 20 years of service.
  • Educational incentive: 2% for AA; 3% for BA; 5% for MA.
