About the position

The Law Enforcement Communications Specialist position is a critical role within the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, located in Oklahoma City, OK. This position is responsible for the operation of communications equipment in a law enforcement communication center, providing essential information to law enforcement officials, other agencies, and the general public. The specialist will work in a 24/7/365 environment, managing requests for information and assistance received via telephone, email, and tip lines. This role requires the entry of Watch Desk activity into the agency's record management system and making notifications to OSBI personnel as necessary. In addition to monitoring and assessing incoming requests, the specialist will utilize various investigative resources, including OLETS, NLETS, and NCIC, to conduct inquiries related to criminal history, vehicle registrations, and other investigative support requests. The position also involves performing security and safety functions for OSBI properties, which includes monitoring CCTV and alarm systems, as well as managing building and gate access. The specialist will provide clerical support as needed and maintain operations for the OSBI headquarters reception, which includes greeting visitors, maintaining front-end security, and logging visitors and evidence. The role requires the operation of radio communication equipment, dispatching messages, and providing a communications link for personnel in the field. The specialist will interpret and relay information regarding wanted persons and violations of laws, and will be responsible for maintaining written records and logs of shift activities. The position may also involve composing and releasing messages concerning emergencies and incidents to field offices and the media. As a career-level position, the incumbent will perform highly responsible work and may operate independently on assigned shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, assess, and manage requests for information and assistance received by telephone, email, and tip lines.
  • Enter Watch Desk activity for OSBI in the agency record management system and notify OSBI personnel as needed.
  • Utilize OLETS, NLETS, and NCIC to conduct inquiries on criminal history, vehicle registrations, and other investigative support requests.
  • Perform security and safety functions for OSBI properties, including monitoring CCTV and alarm systems.
  • Provide clerical support and maintain operations for OSBI HQ reception, including greeting visitors and managing front-end security.
  • Operate radio communication equipment and dispatch messages on an assigned shift.
  • Interpret and relay information to field personnel concerning wanted persons and violations of laws.
  • Research criminal history information, including INTERPOL data, through various systems.
  • Make immediate decisions on information received and disseminate to field personnel and other law enforcement agencies as appropriate.
  • Maintain written records and logs of shift activities and compose messages concerning emergencies and incidents.

Requirements

  • Six months of experience as a communications dispatcher or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting fifteen semester hours of college for the required experience.
  • Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations concerning radio communications.
  • Familiarity with OLETS, NLETS, and NCIC operating manuals.
  • Understanding of state and federal laws concerning the use of criminal records.
  • Knowledge of agency communications policies and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in law enforcement or emergency services communications.
  • Proficiency in typing at a rate of twenty-five words per minute or more.
