About the position
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Emergency Department is responsible for coordinating total patient care and education for emergency patients under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer and the Director of the Emergency Department. This role involves working within the LPN's scope of practice to ensure patient safety and satisfaction, while also assisting with the orientation and preceptorship of new staff. The LPN will be expected to work flexible hours, including day and night shifts, based on unit needs.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate total patient care and education for assigned emergency patients.
- Assist the Charge Nurse or RN with orientation and preceptorship for LPNs, ED Nurse Techs, or Unit Secretaries.
- Document total care given and maintain patient charts per policy.
- Monitor and reassess patients' vital signs and report concerns to RN or provider.
- Administer medications safely according to the six rights and document any adverse reactions immediately.
- Perform IV therapy as per physician's orders and hospital policy.
- Participate in the development of unit goals and assist with staffing and scheduling policies.
- Provide information on trends related to patient outcomes to the ED Director or Charge Nurse.
- Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements such as EMTALA, DNV, and CMS.
Requirements
- Current LPN license and ability to function within the LPN scope of practice.
- Ability to prioritize patient care based on assessment data.
- Strong communication skills to relay patient needs to other disciplines.
- Ability to cope with frequent unpleasant sights/smells and difficult patient behaviors.
- Demonstrated knowledge of patient-centered care and advocacy.
