About the position

The Lead Accountant at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for maintaining double-entry commercial accounting and ensuring accountability for appropriations, revolving funds, and trust fund accounts. This role requires independent judgment and a comprehensive understanding of accounting operations, especially in the absence of the Chief Accountant. The Lead Accountant will also provide support and training to other accounting staff and communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Review policies and procedures related to financial performance data to provide management with accurate tools and information.
  • Apply VA accounting principles and methodologies to daily operations.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and validate data through periodic reconciliations.
  • Provide backup support and training to Accounting Technicians and other Accountants.
  • Communicate efficiently with external customers and internal Finance staff.
  • Complete reports for management or stakeholders as needed.
  • Notify management of any irregularities promptly.
  • Build and maintain healthy working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Safeguard data provided in financial and subsidiary systems.
  • Analyze submitted data for accuracy and process appropriate transactions according to policy.
  • Assist with internal and external audits and reviews.
  • Lead other Accountants and Accounting Technicians.
  • Represent the team in dealings with supervisors or managers to obtain resources and secure needed information.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must meet Individual Occupational Requirements, including a degree in accounting or a related field with 24 semester hours in accounting.
  • At least 4 years of experience in accounting or a combination of education and experience that provides professional accounting knowledge.
  • Specialized experience at the GS-11 level or equivalent, including knowledge of accounting policies, obligations, payments, and auditing requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certification.
  • Experience with computerized accounting systems such as IFCAP and FMS.
