About the position

The Lead AI Autonomous Systems and Robotics Engineer at MITRE will play a pivotal role in advancing the development of autonomous systems and robotics capabilities. This position involves leveraging technical expertise to enhance AI and autonomy system performance, leading research initiatives, and providing guidance to sponsors on autonomy solutions. The role is situated within a dynamic team focused on addressing complex challenges in AI and autonomy for government missions, contributing to a safer and more secure world.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain knowledge of advances in autonomy and robotics capabilities in industry and academia
  • Leverage technical expertise to evaluate and improve AI/Autonomy system performance
  • Provide thought and team leadership centered around autonomy/AI technology adoption on robotics hardware and cloud-based computing environments
  • Develop, propose, and lead research in the field of autonomy and AI
  • Evaluate autonomy or AI solutions and provide guidance to sponsors based on their requirements
  • Work on topics in robotics-relevant fields, such as computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, planning, human machine teaming, and multi-robot systems
  • Build a team, capabilities, and work program in one or more growth areas for Autonomous Systems (e.g., maritime autonomy, healthcare robotics, space robotics)
  • Help department and division execute strategy around enabling high-consequence applications of Autonomy, including necessary assurance, T&E, and societal implications

Requirements

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or Software Engineering, or similar field; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance
  • Understand the breadth of autonomous systems across different domains (DoD, Services, Intelligence Community, DHS, Industry and Academia)
  • Experience in robotics-relevant fields, such as computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, planning, human machine teaming, and multi-robot systems
  • Ability to articulate autonomy-specific challenges (in perception, reasoning, behaviors, collaborations), discuss critical issues, and identify gaps
  • Familiarity with the state of the art in the field
  • Knowledge of the challenges of developing autonomous and AI systems that are robust in real world scenarios
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Must have demonstrated proficiency and strength in verbal, written, PC, presentation, and communications skills
  • Proven ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, languages, platforms, systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to foster relationship development with sponsors

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in technical field of study
  • Experience leading either technical or project teams, or serving as a group direct supervisor
  • Practical knowledge of simulation environments for AI/autonomous systems
  • Understanding of the Federal Government, specifically with relation to AI and Autonomy interests, missions, and organizations
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance
