About the position

The Lead AI Software Systems Engineer at MITRE will develop systems utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies to address complex challenges in various domains such as healthcare, intelligence, and defense. This role emphasizes human-centered engineering practices, leading teams to create innovative solutions that enhance collaboration between human teams and AI systems. The position requires a strong background in software engineering and AI fundamentals, with a focus on building tools that leverage modern frameworks and methodologies.

Responsibilities

• Assist MITRE and government sponsors in the architecture and implementation of solutions to solve challenging problems in domains such as healthcare, intelligence, and defense.
• Lead complex projects, planning and guiding the work of others in the technical development of AI-focused applications and other software solutions.
• Lead teams to solve problems utilizing modern software engineering techniques, data engineering techniques, and human-centered methodologies.
• Demonstrate expertise in industry standard best practices for software design, implementation, testing, and documentation.
• Build systems that incorporate LLM, AI, and ML technologies.
• Apply rapid prototyping techniques and agile methodologies.

Requirements

• Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
• 6+ years of related experience with programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, Python, SQL, R, and C++.
• Experience building systems with AI and ML technologies.
• Strong fundamentals in software engineering, object-oriented programming, web application development, software architecture, and data engineering.
• Familiarity with the general principles, constructs, and concepts in which AI/ML tools are built.
• Experience leading project teams of diverse skillsets.
• Proven ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, languages, platforms, and systems.
• Strong written and verbal communications skills.
• Demonstrated ability to apply principles, theories, and concepts comparable to those obtained with a Master's degree in a relevant field of study.
• US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD Top Secret clearance.
