About the position

The Lead Archives Specialist position is a critical role within the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), specifically located in the National Declassification Center. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the review, referral, and declassification of classified records that are 25 years old or older and have been accessioned to NARA. This includes both textual and non-textual records. The position requires a deep understanding of archival processes and the ability to manage complex requests for access to classified records. The Lead Archives Specialist will also coordinate with other federal agencies regarding records for which NARA does not have declassification authority, ensuring that all requests are handled efficiently and in compliance with federal regulations. In this role, the incumbent will provide independent guidance to on-site researchers and web-based requesters, assisting them in navigating the complexities of access demand requests, including Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, Mandatory Declassification Review (MDR), and special review or indexing on demand requests. The Lead Archives Specialist will be expected to enter and update information in databases to track the declassification review process and manage the handling of requests effectively. This position is essential for maintaining the integrity of the archival process and ensuring that classified information is handled appropriately and in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

  • Explain team goals and objectives and assist the team in organizing to accomplish work.
  • Provide independent guidance to on-site researchers and web-based requesters regarding strategies for perfecting access demand requests.
  • Coordinate records for which NARA does not have declassification authority with appropriate federal agencies.
  • Enter and update information in databases for proper tracking, declassification review, and handling of requests.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level in the Federal service.
  • Experience with archival work including access review, processing, preservation, and/or reference.
  • Ability to communicate assignments and deadlines to a team and/or individuals.
  • Experience analyzing and evaluating records to make determinations based on regulations and/or guidelines.
