About the position

As the Lead Avionics Mechanical Engineer, you will oversee and mentor a team of avionics mechanical engineers, focusing on the mechanical integration of avionics for new rockets and spacecraft. This role involves analyzing thermal and dynamic environments, developing new avionics components, and collaborating with an agile team dedicated to creating high-performance vehicles from the ground up.

Responsibilities

• Analyze loads and environments to develop thermally and structurally efficient designs
• Work closely with engineers in other departments to create globally effective solutions
• Perform hand calculations to determine appropriate member sizes
• Produce engineering drawings with required specifications for manufacturing
• Mentor other mechanical engineers on the team and uphold excellent standards
• Update designs and documentation as required
• Work with in-house manufacturing group and external suppliers to produce designs

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
• 4+ years of demonstrated experience in mechanical design
• Proficiency with CAD software and the ability to learn new tools
• Experience in creating finite element models for component stresses, modal, and/or thermal analysis
• Experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) for aluminum components
• Ability to apply dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
• Demonstrated experience working collaboratively across teams
• Ability to communicate technical challenges, explain rationale and/or resolve concerns

Nice-to-haves

• Creative design solutions to complex problems
• Experience in designing optical devices, motorized devices, battery packs, or RF devices
• Experience with Siemens NX
• Experience with component verification testing including vibration, shock, thermal, etc.
• Familiarity with spacecraft thermal design, e.g. optical properties of surface coatings
• Experience in a startup or agile development environment
