About the position

The Lead Buyer at STERIS is responsible for purchasing assigned commodities to meet production needs and internal specifications. This role involves negotiating with suppliers, managing relationships, and addressing quality issues related to supplier products. The Lead Buyer will implement continuous improvement activities to enhance the purchasing department's quality, cost, and delivery initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities for and implement continuous improvement activities in the purchasing department.
  • Implement and maintain standard work documentation and Lean procedures for compliance.
  • Source and secure quotes from qualified suppliers to obtain favorable prices and quality products/services.
  • Purchase products to support Manufactured Products and Non-Inventory requirements.
  • Collaborate with requisitioners and departments to understand product needs before order placement.
  • Prepare and distribute purchase orders, verifying specifications and prices.
  • Monitor item deliveries and expedite orders as necessary.
  • Verify receipt of items and resolve shipping errors with suppliers.
  • Authorize payment for purchases and resolve invoice errors with Accounts Payable.
  • Develop procedures to resolve trending errors and prevent reoccurrences.
  • Reconcile Problem Packing Slips/Bills of Lading/Certificate of Conformance or Analysis and facilitate returns of rejected material.
  • Engage in negotiations with vendors on pricing, delivery, service, and quality.
  • Function as an authorized agent of the company to commit resources through contracts and agreements for procurement.
  • Participate in supplier audits and assist the Quality department in assessing supplier capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain, Business, or related field.
  • 3-6 years of progressive experience in the procurement field, or a High School Diploma with thirteen years of experience in procurement.
  • Solid understanding of regulated industry and direct hands-on experience in an MRP system environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional certification (SPM, CPIM, CSCP).
  • Experience in a lean manufacturing environment.
