About the position

The Lead CAD Draftsman at Palm City Millwork is responsible for overseeing all aspects of detailing and cutlisting, while also performing Document Controller duties. This role requires close collaboration with the Drafting & Engineering Supervisor, Salesmen, and Shop Supervisors to ensure that all drafting and detailing processes meet the company's standards and production needs. The primary objective of the detailing department is to maintain adherence to the standards and construction methods of doors and windows, ensuring a high level of quality and accuracy in drawings and cut lists. The Lead CAD Draftsman will produce cut lists and checklists using Excel based on approved customer drawings and maintain procedures as outlined in Palm City Millwork's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This position also involves managing drafting vendors, maintaining department equipment and supplies, and ensuring that established drafting standards are implemented and adhered to. The Lead CAD Draftsman is expected to meet and exceed project schedules and lead times for drawing submittals while promoting effective communication between all departments involved in the drafting process. In addition to managing the in-house drafting team, the Lead CAD Draftsman will coordinate drawing submittal schedules, monitor project trackers, and drive work from drafting into cutlists and checklists after receiving approved drawings from customers. This role requires a proactive approach to identifying potential issues that could hinder project progress and addressing them promptly. The Lead CAD Draftsman will also establish and maintain relationships with various drafting contractors to ensure project schedules are met and integrate these vendors into the daily drafting process. Overall, this position plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the detailing department, contributing to the overall success of Palm City Millwork.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of detailing and cutlisting.
  • Perform Document Controller duties.
  • Maintain adherence to standards and construction methods of doors and windows.
  • Ensure a high level of quality and accuracy of drawings and cut lists.
  • Produce cut lists and checklists via Excel on approved customer drawings.
  • Maintain procedures as detailed in Palm City Millwork's SOPs.
  • Satisfy overall shop production and sales needs.
  • Implement and ensure established drafting standards, including completeness, accuracy, and constructability.
  • Manage drafting vendors as needed.
  • Maintain and advise on department equipment and supplies.
  • Meet and beat the standard schedule of all projects.
  • Promote proper communications between all departments.
  • Identify needs regarding technical training of department personnel.
  • Continuously monitor projects for potential issues and address them accordingly.
  • Manage the in-house drafting team and coordinate drawing submittal schedules.
  • Maintain the designer's intent for drawing approval.
  • Incorporate needs of constructability into shop drawings.
  • Monitor and document department status for projects under control.
  • Drive work from drafting into cutlist and checklist after approved drawings from customers.
  • Actively manage drafting team members based on shop and project priorities.
  • Coordinate communications with sales and the drafting team.
  • Manage drafting out-source team and establish relationships with drafting contractors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Architectural Drafting or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in drafting architectural millwork.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage individuals, teams, and processes.
  • Diverse experience within architectural millwork and related trade required.
  • Strong ability to read blueprints and architectural drawings.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD's latest version.
  • Working knowledge of Solidworks is a plus.
  • Experience with MS Excel required.
  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience working in a millwork shop.
  • Strong understanding of wood and machining processes.
  • Ability to keep current on contemporary materials and processes.
  • Working knowledge of custom millwork fabrication and subcontracting practices within the construction industry.
