About the position

The City of Farmington is seeking a dedicated and skilled Lead Carpenter to join the General Services/Building Maintenance Department. This full-time position is essential for the planning, scheduling, and execution of construction, maintenance, and repair projects within city-owned facilities. The Lead Carpenter will work under the general direction of the Building Maintenance Superintendent and will be responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the structural integrity and aesthetic quality of city buildings. The role requires excellent customer service skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, employees, and the general public. In this position, the Lead Carpenter will oversee the construction and maintenance of both interior and exterior spaces, including structural framing in wood and metal, roof construction, and concrete work. The Lead Carpenter will also be responsible for the design and construction of custom cabinetry and furnishings for various city departments. This role involves direct supervision of both regular and temporary workers, ensuring that all projects are completed on time and within budget. The Lead Carpenter will also be tasked with project planning, which includes developing shop drawings, work schedules, and accurate cost estimates for work requests. The Lead Carpenter will manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring compliance with safety and building codes, and will be responsible for maintaining a safe and organized work environment. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders to coordinate project tasks and schedules. Attendance at work is considered an essential function of this position, and the Lead Carpenter may also serve as the Acting Building Maintenance Superintendent in their absence.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and perform construction, maintenance, and repairs of interior and exterior facility spaces.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public using excellent customer service skills.
  • Supervise regular and temporary workers as assigned by the Building Maintenance Superintendent.
  • Develop shop drawings necessary for the completion of work requests and job orders.
  • Identify work crew composition and size required to complete work requests and job orders.
  • Develop work schedules to complete work requests and job orders.
  • Source materials and develop bills of material required for work requests and job orders.
  • Provide accurate cost estimates for work requests and job orders.
  • Track and match all material purchases to applicable receipts for audit purposes.
  • Order and maintain shop stock materials to avoid work stoppages.
  • Manage multiple projects and work orders simultaneously.
  • Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of repairs on city buildings, including minor electrical and plumbing work.
  • Coordinate and track state building code inspections on projects.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and personal protection procedures on job sites.

Requirements

  • Experience in carpentry and construction management.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Strong leadership skills to supervise and manage a team effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with city customers and officials.
  • Knowledge of building codes and safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in project planning and scheduling.
