About the position

Sargent & Lundy's Government Services Division is at the forefront of engineering design and consulting, providing essential support to the management and operating contractors for the US Department of Energy (DOE) sites and national laboratories. This role as a Lead Chemical Engineer is pivotal in contributing to projects aimed at cleaning up environmental damage from the legacy nuclear weapons production complex and ensuring the safety and security of our nation's nuclear deterrent. The position offers a unique opportunity to be part of multi-discipline design teams that are responsible for designing facilities, systems, and equipment that treat, store, and dispose of nuclear waste, as well as systems that safely handle and process nuclear materials. As a senior-level design engineer, you will engage in a variety of challenging opportunities within Chemical/Process Engineering, which will facilitate your career advancement. Your academic background will be utilized to conduct the design of processes for both new and modified systems. You will be responsible for evaluating and reviewing both new and existing energy and industrial facilities, preparing comprehensive reports and calculations to assess proposed system designs, upgrades, modifications, and equipment/system replacements. This role requires a strong commitment to quality and safety, as you will perform work under an NQA-1 quality assurance program, ensuring that all engineering calculations, analyses, design drawings, specifications, and reports are technically sound and meet project requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead process engineering design efforts on multi-disciplined project design teams.
  • Produce engineering calculations/analyses, design drawings, specifications, and engineering reports.
  • Support hazard and safety analyses and risk management analyses.
  • Monitor the work of assigned staff on technical matters pertinent to project assignments.
  • Maintain assigned tasks within schedule and budget to fit the needs of the projects.
  • Use effective written and oral communication skills to convey information to project team members and managers.
  • Present written technical information clearly and concisely in all deliverables.
  • Prepare reports and deliverables that meet client requirements and communicate clearly in meetings with clients.
  • Perform radiation shielding analyses in support of nuclear facility clients using MicroShield.
  • Conduct system reliability analysis using fault trees, event trees, and reliability block diagrams with BlockSim or similar software.
  • Provide technical guidance to project team members and may mentor new engineers.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen; dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.
  • BS in Chemical Engineering or MS in Chemical Engineering from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a strong academic background.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in civil and Chemical/Process engineering.
  • Understanding of the practical application of chemical/process engineering and technology, including applying systems, principles, techniques, and procedures to project design, and mass and heat balances.
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to quickly identify and prioritize issues, create solutions, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering (PE) Licensure.
  • Knowledge of programs such as ASPEN or similar process modeling software, MicroShield, MCNP, Crystal Ball, BlockSim, and Microsoft applications.
  • Familiarity with major federal environmental regulatory programs such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
  • Multiple years of experience in a nuclear environment (DOE preferred, commercial or Navy) is highly desirable.
  • Experience with nuclear materials/wastes and their associated processes.
