About the position

As a Lead Copywriter in Brand Creative at Petco, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the voice and messaging of our brand. Your primary responsibility will be to create compelling written content that resonates with our audience and aligns with our mission to improve the lives of pets, pet parents, and our planet. You will be involved in researching and preparing written copy for a variety of complex marketing applications and programs, including press releases, articles, scripts, social media content, and promotional literature. This role requires a deep understanding of animal welfare topics and the ability to translate complex ideas into engaging and accessible messages. You will establish and ensure adherence to a style guide that will be used across the organization, developing new principles and concepts for copywriting. Your research skills will be essential as you study industry data and trends, as well as communication techniques from other organizations. You will also forecast and plan for future internal and external needs, developing copy content for diverse marketing applications, including audio and video scripting, annual reports, and executive presentations. In addition to your writing responsibilities, you will participate in high-level brand strategy and campaign ideation, providing guidance to staff and collaborating with various teams to ensure that our messaging is consistent and impactful. This position requires a minimum of 10 years of copywriting or editorial experience in an advertising or marketing-related environment, along with a strong educational background in English, creative writing, marketing, journalism, or communications.

Responsibilities

  • Research and prepare written copy content for various marketing applications and programs, including press releases, articles, scripts, and social media content.
  • Establish and ensure adherence to a style guide for copywriting across the organization.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in English, creative writing, marketing, journalism, communications, or a related field.
  • 10 years of copywriting or editorial experience in an advertising or marketing-related environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to understand and communicate complex concepts in long-form copy.
  • Strong short-form and long-form writing skills in various voices and tones.
  • Digital experience is required.
  • Strong vocabulary, grammar, editing, and proofreading capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to embrace change and adapt strategies as needed.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable operating in ambiguity.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the pet industry or animal welfare topics.
  • Familiarity with digital marketing strategies and tools.
