About the position

The Lead Custodian II position at Newport News Public Schools is a full-time role responsible for overseeing and participating in the cleaning processes within the school environment. The Lead Custodian will supervise custodial staff, ensuring that all areas are routinely cleaned and well-maintained. This includes not only the cleaning of classrooms, bathrooms, offices, and hallways but also the management of custodial supplies and equipment. The role involves training new custodial staff, performing minor maintenance tasks, and ensuring compliance with safety and waste disposal regulations. The Lead Custodian will also be responsible for monitoring timekeeping records, evaluating staff performance, and promoting a safe and healthy environment for students and employees alike. In addition to the supervisory duties, the Lead Custodian will engage in hands-on cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and sanitizing various surfaces. The position requires the use of specialized equipment, such as power lifts for high cleaning tasks, and the ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance on custodial equipment. The Lead Custodian will also be involved in the ordering and inventory management of custodial supplies, ensuring that the necessary tools and materials are available for effective cleaning operations. This role is crucial in maintaining the overall cleanliness and functionality of the school environment, contributing to a positive atmosphere for learning and teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, participates in and oversees all custodial work, maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
  • Provides training for members of the custodial staff at assigned location.
  • Performs minor maintenance such as replacing light bulbs or tubes, switch or outlet covers, ceiling tile or pencil sharpeners.
  • Uses a power lift to perform some tasks up to 40 ft.
  • Complies with laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash and waste.
  • Monitors and reports the timekeeping records of all custodial employees in the school.
  • Helps in the selection, assignment, scheduling, and training of custodial staff.
  • Orders custodial supplies using the computerized work order system, maintains an inventory and recommends selection of suitable supplies, tools and equipment.
  • Inspects work of other custodial staff.
  • Evaluates the performance of the custodial staff on a regular basis.
  • Strives constantly to promote the safety, health and comfort of the students and employees.
  • Locks and unlocks doors; activates and deactivates alarm system.
  • Sweeps, mops, dusts all classrooms, bathrooms, offices, hallways, and specialty rooms.
  • Uses appropriate equipment and supplies to wipe and sanitizes toilets, sinks, mirrors, countertops, windows and water fountains.
  • Empties trash.
  • Stocks paper products at all points of use.
  • Waxes floors and operates buffing machine; Mops and buffs the cafeteria; Vacuums and cares for building carpeting.
  • Washes windows and furniture.
  • Picks up litter and debris on outside school grounds.
  • Moves furniture, folds and unfolds chairs as required.
  • Checks heating and air conditioning for proper operation.
  • Submits work orders to Plant Services by telephone and/or computer.
  • Raises and lowers flags; Delivers packages and messages.
  • Submits monthly light maps to Plant Services first Wednesday of the month.
  • Loads and unloads delivery trucks.
  • Makes minor repairs to equipment and furniture as needed.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Requirements

  • Considerable experience as a custodian in a school and some supervisory experience preferred.
  • Completion of a standard high school diploma or GED.
  • Trade school course or equivalent combination of experience and training required.
  • Thorough knowledge of proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining resilient tile floors, carpeted floors, and terrazzo floors.
  • Ability to read and write in English and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Basic math skills associated with chemical mixing, square footage of surfaces to be cleaned and labor-related calculations.
  • Excellent attendance record and demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Computer literacy.
