About the position

The Lead Cytotechnologist position at the St. Louis VA Medical Center involves performing complex laboratory diagnostic testing in the specialty of cytopathology. The role is crucial for diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases through the analysis of human specimens. The incumbent will work independently and collaboratively with pathologists, ensuring high-quality laboratory practices and contributing to the overall mission of providing outstanding service to veterans.

Responsibilities

  • Report microscopic interpretations of normal pap smear tests for cervical cancer detection.
  • Provide preliminary interpretations of specimens from various body sites.
  • Collaborate with pathologists to diagnose benign and infectious processes, precancerous lesions, and malignant diseases.
  • Independently perform and monitor smear preparation, slide fixation, cell block preparation, monolayer filtration processing, and staining.
  • Troubleshoot and take corrective action when discrepancies are identified in laboratory processes.
  • Act as a technical resource in writing and establishing new processes or procedures.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data according to the laboratory quality management program.
  • Implement quality improvement initiatives based on laboratory data.
  • Research, test, validate, and implement new procedures and equipment.
  • Oversee operations of the gross room and frozen section rooms, performing gross tissue examinations and prosection of anatomic pathology specimens.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university and completed an accredited cytotechnology program.
  • Currently possess Cytotechnologist (CT) or Specialist in Cytotechnology (SCT) certification from ASCP.
  • At least 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the full performance level (GS-9) directly related to the position.

  • Knowledge of laboratory requirements for developing and maintaining written instructions and standard operating procedures.
