About the position

The Lead Operating Engineer is responsible for supervising and directing maintenance staff in a data center or critical facility environment. This role involves ensuring the efficient operation of building systems, overseeing maintenance requests, and implementing preventative maintenance programs. The Lead Operating Engineer also plays a key role in training staff, managing contractors, and maintaining safety and compliance standards while striving for 100% uptime of engineering systems.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct maintenance staff on shift and monitor performance of assigned responsibilities.
  • Perform and/or direct the performance of all maintenance departmental service requests, ensuring efficient work with minimal disruption.
  • Check malfunctioning equipment and determine corrective actions required for restoration.
  • Provide training and supervision to expand the capabilities of operations staff.
  • Demonstrate proper use and care of tools and instruments, and provide hands-on instruction in maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Supervise and implement the preventative maintenance program, scheduling tasks to minimize disruption.
  • Order parts and equipment required for repair and maintenance, and maintain inventory.
  • Direct the performance of contracted maintenance work, ensuring timely completion and compliance with warranty obligations.
  • Maintain, monitor, and perform preventive maintenance on all building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and emergency backup systems.
  • Record readings and make adjustments to ensure proper operation of equipment.
  • Comply with safety policies for hazardous materials storage and disposal, maintaining a clean workplace.
  • Prepare and submit purchase-order requests and develop sources for stock materials.
  • Oversee the operational management and leadership of the engineering team, ensuring professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Keep records of building rounds, engineering logs, and data sheets.
  • Train contractors on building critical functions and ensure compliance with emergency procedures.
  • Assist Chief Engineer in implementing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Individual Performance Plans.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience in a data center/critical facility, including UPS Systems, emergency generators, and switch-gear.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 5+ years of related work experience, including supervisory experience.
  • Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent.
  • Certification as a Universal Technician for CFC's (or within 90 days of employment).
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated verbal/written communication skills.
  • Proven record of excellent internal and external customer service.
