About the position

As Data Governance Lead, you will spearhead the implementation of Valley's enterprise-wide data governance program. This role requires applying principles derived from industry best practices to enhance Valley's data governance framework, which includes defining and developing data quality controls and instituting data management policies and processes. You will work closely with various stakeholders, including business data owners and stewards, data scientists, product owners, and developers, to cultivate a collaborative environment that ensures data consistency, reliability, and compliance with data-related policies and regulations. The Governance Lead will also play a pivotal role in establishing and enhancing various data management committees and working groups. Your responsibilities will encompass designing and developing enterprise-wide data governance programs, frameworks, and principles that reflect the latest industry best practices. You will evolve existing policies and processes while developing new data governance-related standards, metrics, and controls. Supporting the Data Governance committee with governance policies, processes, and compliance will be a key aspect of your role. You will define data quality controls, monitoring, and remediation processes in partnership with data owners, data stewards, and data delivery teams. Collaborating with business stakeholders to define data quality requirements and conducting data quality assessments will also be part of your duties. Additionally, you will ensure that critical data elements (CDEs) metadata, business definitions, and lineage are thoroughly documented. Managing the design and implementation of the data catalog to reflect both short-term and long-term goals will be essential. You will support enterprise metadata management and related activities, contributing to the continuous improvement of data glossary and cataloging practices. Collaborating with Business Units, data stewards, and technical owners will be necessary to drive business process and workflow improvements. You will assist Data Stewards and Data Officers with the documentation of data flows and data lineage as needed, and contribute to related initiatives as required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and implement Valley's enterprise-wide data governance program.
  • Design and develop enterprise-wide data governance programs, frameworks, and principles.
  • Evolve existing and develop new data governance-related policies, processes, standards, metrics, and controls.
  • Support Data Governance committee with governance policies, processes, and compliance.
  • Define data quality controls, monitoring, and remediation processes in partnership with data owners and data stewards.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to define data quality requirements and conduct data quality assessments.
  • Ensure CDEs metadata, business definitions, and lineage are documented.
  • Manage data catalog design and implementation, reflecting both short-term and long-term goals.
  • Support enterprise metadata management and related activities.
  • Support continuous improvement of data glossary/cataloguing practices.
  • Collaborate with Business Unit(s), data stewards/data officers, and technical owners/IT to drive business process and workflow improvements.
  • Assist Data Stewards/Data Officers with documentation of data flows/data lineage as needed.
  • Contribute to related initiatives as needed.

Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in a data-centric field (Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Engineering or other science field), Information Systems, Information Processing or engineering.
  • 7+ years' experience developing and implementing Data Governance policies and processes.
  • Exhibit ability to partner and coordinate data initiatives across multiple teams and functions to ensure adherence to best practices and meet data governance objectives.
  • Prior experience in designing and developing standard database objects such as tables, stored procedures, views, functions, and indexes.
  • Database design experience and experience with data modeling tools like Erwin.
  • Experience with Snowflake (or similar SQL-based cloud platform).
  • Strong SQL skills.
  • Experience with leading vendor tools to support data governance activities (e.g. Informatica, Collibra).
  • Excellent communication and business writing skills, including the ability to draft business requirements.
  • Ability to rapidly comprehend changes to key business processes and the impact on overall Data Governance framework.
  • Flexibility to adjust to multiple demands, shifting priorities, ambiguity, and rapid change.
  • Advanced analytical skills.
  • High level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Self-starter attitude with the ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of legal, compliance, and regulatory issues impacting data.
  • Experience in Retail and Commercial banking strongly preferred.
