About the position

The Lead Data Platform Engineer at Johnson & Johnson will play a pivotal role in guiding the development of the AI/ML Data platform. This position involves collaborating with various teams to enhance workflows, ensuring robust security measures, and leading the integration of multi-modal AI capabilities. The engineer will also be responsible for defining a long-term feature roadmap and optimizing the architecture for scalability and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Guide critical aspects of the team's charter and strategy in developing the ML & AI Platform.
  • Collaborate with Data Scientists, Applied ML, and Applied AI teams to understand their needs and prioritize initiatives that accelerate their workflows.
  • Work with other engineering teams such as Cloud and Security to inform system design and integrate new systems into the enterprise stack.
  • Define and develop standard methodologies and processes to support efficient team operations.
  • Define advanced features such as automated machine learning (AutoML), distributed training, model optimization techniques, and APIs/SDKs for seamless integration of AI services.
  • Collaborate with the data engineering team to design efficient data ingestion, preprocessing, and feature engineering pipelines.
  • Ensure robust security measures, including model and data encryption, access controls, and compliance with Enterprise AI regulations.
  • Lead efforts in multi-modal AI, incorporating text, image, audio, and video processing capabilities into the platform.
  • Define and run a 12+ month feature roadmap, balancing value creation and cost considerations.
  • Work multi-functionally with executives, sales, product marketing, and customer success teams to meet objectives and communicate plans.
  • Collect and analyze feedback from customers, partners, and other teams to craft requirements, features, and final products.
  • Stay informed about evolving data platform technologies and industry trends to advise on strategic enhancements.
  • Collaborate with J&J teams to create a robust, flexible architecture supporting current and future data products (e.g., unstructured data).
  • Design and optimize the architecture using proven data platform methodologies, ensuring scalability, performance, and security.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field is required; Master's is preferred.
  • 5 years of infrastructure engineering experience, including more than 5 years in building, launching, and scaling enterprise AI solutions using ML/AI infrastructure services from leading cloud providers.
  • Demonstrated ability in team management.
  • 5 years of experience as an ML or Data Platform engineer focused on ML/AI.
  • Expertise in MLOps and distributed systems, as well as cloud-native architectures.
  • Proven track record in business partnership, effectively communicating and collaborating with customers, prospects, and partners.
  • 5+ years of engineering management experience, especially in ML/AI platform roles.
  • Proven experience in LLM Ops and Generative AI applications and infrastructure.
  • Strong technical competence, with the capability to understand and debate technical and product tradeoffs, and approach building scalable architectures.
  • Passion for developing, coaching, and scaling team members.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with one or more of the following AI/ML Tools & Libraries: Dataiku, AWS Sagemaker, Domino, Alteryx, SAS, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, MLFlow.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration tools such as EKS Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Argo Workflows.
