About the position

The Lead Database Administrator for Enterprise Data & Analytics at the University of Iowa is responsible for developing, administering, and controlling institutional data resources to ensure their availability, performance, integrity, and security. This role involves creating and maintaining SSIS ETL processes, administering enterprise analytics tools, and collaborating with analytics teams to migrate content to Power BI. The position also includes establishing best practices for analytics development and providing support for Power BI tool performance and security.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain databases and analytical content associated with organizational initiatives.
  • Develop processes that automate data collection, data integration, and reporting efforts.
  • Execute Power BI administrative tasks to support infrastructure growth, including managing workspaces and securing resources.
  • Offer best practice guidance and documentation for Power BI development to both internal and external developers.
  • Conduct QA checks of Power BI content before deploying it into production workspaces.
  • Monitor Power BI capacity activity and address issues such as slow report performance and resource allocation.
  • Assist with troubleshooting Power BI issues and engage with the tool vendor when necessary.
  • Work with analytics teams to develop and implement dataflows and semantic models.
  • Maintain clear and complete documentation for all analytical processes and procedures.
  • Provide data management support to ensure data quality, consistency, and accuracy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or MIS, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Typically 5 years of experience working directly with relational database systems using SQL and SQL procedural languages.
  • Thorough understanding of relational database design fundamentals and ability to write and interpret complex SQL DML and DDL statements.
  • Experience using statistical computer languages (R, Python, SQL) to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets.
  • Ability to interpret, modify, and create complex custom database stored procedures and functions.
  • Experience with interpreting query execution plans to identify performance improvement opportunities in high-volume database environments.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Proficiency in Power BI.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and strong interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Cloud computing in Microsoft Azure including Power BI solution architecture and data lake storage techniques.
  • Experience implementing source/version control in SSIS.
  • Practical experience working with the Epic EHR and their Clarity and Caboodle analytic platforms.
