About the position

We are looking for a Lead Database Administrator to join our team in the US. As a Lead Database Administrator, you will be responsible for developing, administering, and supporting hosted and on-premises customers in a collaborative environment. This role requires a skilled DBA with experience in both Cloud and On-premises platforms, as well as familiarity with AGILE methodologies to support our Intellectual Property Database team (IPDG DBA). This is an exciting opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team that engages with a wide range of technologies. In this position, you will create and maintain all databases required for development, testing, education, and production usage. You will perform capacity planning to ensure the databases are adequately supported and will work closely with system administration. Your role will also involve formulating and executing remediation plans for existing database deployments that do not meet industry and company standards. You will assist in troubleshooting efforts when data integrity or database performance issues arise, and you will be responsible for ongoing tuning of the database instances. Additionally, you will install new versions of MSSQL and its tools, plan and implement backup and recovery strategies, and advise development teams on appropriate database server deployment and configuration. Security enforcement for all SQL databases will be a critical part of your responsibilities, as will performing database re-organizations to enhance performance and ensure maximum uptime. You will also support service delivery and development teams by refreshing non-production database environments and testing patches for compatibility with the database environment. Your expertise will contribute to the overall strategy for the Enterprise Solutions SQL Server estate, supporting internal applications and ensuring that developers can query the databases efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Creates and maintains all databases required for development, testing, education, and production usage.
  • Performs the capacity planning required to create and maintain the databases.
  • Formulates and executes remediation plans for existing database deployments that fall short of industry and company standards.
  • Assists in troubleshooting efforts when data integrity or database performance is suspected to be a possible cause of service issues.
  • Performs ongoing tuning of the database instances.
  • Installs new versions of the MSSQL and its tools and any other tools that access the SQL database.
  • Plans and implements backup and recovery of the MSSQL database.
  • Advises development teams on appropriate database server deployment and configuration.
  • Implements and enforces security for all SQL Databases.
  • Performs database re-organizations as required to assist performance and ensure maximum uptime of the database.
  • Supports service delivery and development teams by refreshing non-production database environments.
  • Tests patches to ensure compatibility with the database environment and participates in regular patching cycles.
  • Enforces and maintains database constraints to ensure integrity of the database.
  • Administers all database objects, including tables, clusters, indexes, views, sequences, packages, and procedures.
  • Assists with impact analysis of any changes made to the database objects.
  • Monitors Database alerts and responds to issues and errors.
  • Assesses, develops, and improves database High Availability/Disaster Recovery strategy.
  • Implements maintenance plans and monitoring to ensure Database instances are running optimally and making best use of computing resources.
  • Contributes to the overall strategy for the Enterprise Solutions SQL Server estate supporting internal applications.
  • Supports developers to ensure their applications query the DBs in the most efficient way possible.
  • Assists with resolving day-to-day incidents with our assets.

Requirements

  • 8 years minimum of experience managing MSSQL and Windows operating systems.
  • 8 years of experience in physical and logical MSSQL Server and database design knowledge.
  • At least 8 years of experience with strong SQL DB architecture logical and physical understanding.
  • At least 8 years of experience in database performance tuning and capacity planning.
  • At least 8 years of experience with strong SQL Administration and MSSQL roles and features.
  • At least 7 years of experience in cloud-based database services, such as AWS RDS and MS Azure.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to perform both MSSQL and operating system performance monitoring and the necessary adjustments.
  • Experience with other DB engines like Oracle Server, MySQL, and Postgres databases.
  • Good knowledge of the operating systems.
  • Experience working in AWS or any other cloud like Azure.
  • Experience/Understanding with DevOps and automation tools and basic knowledge about CloudOps processes.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools and alerting like Data Dog and Pager Duty.
  • Excellent knowledge of MSSQL backup and recovery scenarios.
  • Excellent skills in all Microsoft tools: SSMS, SSRS, SSIS.
  • Excellent knowledge of MSSQL security management.
  • Experience and knowledge in Database migrating and upgrade.
  • Excellent knowledge of business continuity and data integrity.
