The Lead Database Administrator at Highmark Health is responsible for utilizing specialized knowledge and expertise to lead, implement, maintain, monitor, and ensure the performance of the most complex databases. This role involves planning and implementing upgrades or installations of new components as required, while also mentoring less experienced team members. The administrator will create, develop, and review the physical model derived from the logical model, ensuring that the detailed physical design of complex data structures and databases adheres to established standards, guidelines, and procedures for data modeling, database design, and maintenance. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Lead Database Administrator provides leadership support for application staff and business areas regarding complex database implementations, which may include customized in-house databases or third-party application packages. They will establish automated monitoring mechanisms for space and database availability conditions and lead the establishment of best practices for database and application high availability through the use of third-party technologies and various database features. The role also includes providing application support for staff and external divisions, addressing questions and resolving complex problems related to DBMS technology and computing platforms such as Z/OS, UNIX, Linux, and Windows. The administrator will lead root cause analysis to identify and resolve issues impacting application and database availability and service levels, and will contact vendor support when necessary to facilitate application development and client problem resolution efficiently. After-hours and weekend support is required for on-call responsibilities, database refreshes, testing, technology upgrades, and other complex off-hour assignments. The Lead Database Administrator will establish and maintain technical standards, departmental procedures, and technical documentation, ensuring compliance with corporate standards, procedures, guidelines, and processes, including audits. They will also lead in identifying, developing, and providing technology training to application developers, participating in staff training opportunities related to data access and maintenance. This position involves participation in intra and inter-departmental project initiatives, testing, and recommending tools and utilities to improve the management and support of complex database environments. Maintaining contacts with other DBA professionals in the health insurance and healthcare industries is essential to stay updated on current trends and best practices.
