About the position

Acuity Brands, Inc. is seeking a Lead Design Engineer to join our Indoor Lighting Portfolio team. This position is pivotal in driving product development from concept through production, focusing on new product development, sustaining engineering support, and resolving field problems. The Lead Design Engineer will be responsible for leading mechanical product design and redesign, creating part assemblies, and generating detailed part drawings. This role will also involve leading prototyping efforts, managing complex product test and evaluation programs, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure successful product delivery. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in engineering, particularly in the lighting or electro-mechanical product sectors. They will be expected to teach and lead various aspects of the product design process, including the development of part geometry and assembly designs. The Lead Design Engineer will manage relationships with internal manufacturing facilities and external vendors, ensuring that all parts and assemblies meet quality standards and project timelines. Additionally, they will champion concept development by initiating and developing new product ideas based on project charters and competitive evaluations. In this fast-paced environment, the Lead Design Engineer will continuously seek and implement process improvements related to productivity, quality, and manufacturing. They will also develop certification and validation test plans, working closely with testing groups to evaluate product performance. This role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to driving innovation in lighting technology.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical product design and redesign, creating part assemblies and detailed part drawings.
  • Manage new product development from concept through production, including sustaining engineering support and field problem resolution.
  • Lead prototyping efforts and manage complex product test and evaluation programs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and influence team members to achieve project goals.
  • Conduct team meetings using the product delivery system for major product developments.
  • Develop and approve engineering data, including Engineering Change Notices and bills of material.
  • Manage relationships with internal manufacturing facilities and external vendors to resolve part or assembly issues.
  • Champion concept development for new products based on project charters and competitive evaluations.
  • Continuously implement process improvements related to productivity, quality, and manufacturing.
  • Develop certification and validation test plans and work with testing groups for product evaluation.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven track record of success in engineering of lighting products, appliances, consumer products, or related electro-mechanical products.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and Microsoft Office programs; SolidWorks proficiency preferred.
  • Experience with various manufacturing methods such as stamping, fabricating, casting, and injection molding.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable standards and test processes for UL/CSA, DLC, and/or Energy Star.
  • Familiarity with national and local electric codes and building construction methods.
  • Proficiency in thermal testing and test methods of recessed luminaires.
  • Strong leadership skills to influence and collaborate with team members.
  • Excellent communication skills in verbal, written, and visual formats.
  • Ability to work proficiently in a cross-functional team environment.
