About the position

The Lead Designer, Electrical Planning and Design at National Grid is responsible for providing project, field, and real-time design and drafting for civil and structural aspects of substation design and construction. This role involves collaboration with various engineering and operational teams to ensure successful project completion, focusing on both new and existing substations. The designer will create detailed designs, conduct field inspections, and oversee consultants' work while adhering to industry codes and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide project, field, and real-time design and drafting for civil/structural aspects of substation design and construction.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Civil/Structural & Electrical engineers, Construction, Environmental, and Project Management departments.
  • Create detailed civil/structural designs and drawings for foundations and substation structures.
  • Conduct field inspections and develop comprehensive design reports based on applicable design codes and safety practices.
  • Oversee and review consultants' work to ensure compliance and technical adequacy.
  • Prioritize work and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited university.
  • Proficient with Bentley Microstation and familiar with AutoDesk AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of various structural and foundation systems, and material types such as steel, aluminum, and reinforced concrete.
  • Good working knowledge of construction and utility industry codes and standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of oil containment systems and flood resilient design.
  • General knowledge of civil site design, stormwater design, and Federal/State/local permitting.
  • Familiarity with substation equipment and construction techniques.
