About the position

The Lead Diesel Technician at Durham School Services is responsible for diagnosing malfunctions and performing repairs on diesel and gasoline vehicles. This role requires a strong commitment to safety, quality, and customer service, ensuring that all repairs comply with relevant guidelines. The technician will also supervise other mechanics, maintain a clean work environment, and ensure that all vehicles are safe and operational before being released from the maintenance facility.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses malfunctions and performs vehicle repairs including steering, electrical, cooling, lubricating, braking systems, drive trains, suspensions, and engines.
  • Test-drives vehicles to ensure repairs have resolved the issues.
  • Arranges for and obtains inspections and approvals for major repairs before vehicle release.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and efficient work area in compliance with guidelines.
  • Identifies and reports additional maintenance needs during repairs.
  • Records time spent, parts used, and repairs conducted accurately.
  • Advises Maintenance Supervisor of unsafe conditions or vehicle abuse.
  • Performs road calls and on-the-road repairs as assigned.
  • Exhibits ethical best practices and personal integrity in all work activities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of Med/Hvy truck fleet mechanic repair experience.
  • One to two years of supervisory experience or training.
  • Strong diagnostic, electrical, and AC skills.
  • Technical knowledge of major vehicle systems and diesel equipment.
  • Previous fleet experience with diesel and gasoline systems.
  • Possession of recommended minimum hand tools for a Diesel Technician.
  • Ability to use good judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Valid applicable state license (CDL preferred).
