About the position

As a Lead Electrical Engineer specializing in Solar Utility Scale Design, you will play a pivotal role in managing and leading the design of various solar utility scale projects. This position is integral to the development of electrical design deliverables for solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, which includes creating one-line drawings, collection system layouts, power cable sizing, and equipment sizing. You will actively participate in project management activities, including scheduling and resource planning, while interfacing directly with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure project success. Additionally, you will be responsible for quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of projects and mentoring junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. This role is hybrid, allowing for a balance between in-office and remote work, with three days in the office and two days working remotely. Candidates should be located near any of Black & Veatch's U.S. Regional Offices, which include locations in Burlington, MA; Ann Arbor, MI; Cary, NC; Overland Park, KS; and Houston, TX. Responsibilities

  • Function as a technical lead design engineer managing, leading and designing a variety of solar utility scale projects and teams.
  • Develop electrical design deliverables of solar (PV) panels.
  • Create one line drawings and collection system layouts, power cable sizing and cable schedules, equipment sizing and more.
  • Actively participate in management, project scheduling, and work resource planning meetings.
  • Interface directly with clients, vendors and subcontractors.
  • QA/QC projects and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program.
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience in electrical engineering, specifically in solar utility scale projects.
  • Experience with specifying and procuring electrical equipment such as MV and LV switchgear, transformers, panel boards, breakers, protective relays, inverters, and cables.
  • Familiarity with applicable NEC and IEEE/ANSI standards.
  • Experience with engineering calculations such as load flow, short circuit analysis, arc flash analysis, and cable ampacity studies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completed 1-2 utility scale solar projects.
  • 2 years of solar experience specifically.
