About the position

As a Lead Electrical Engineer specializing in Substation Design and Power Electronics (STATCOM/FACTS/HVDC) at Black & Veatch, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of energy infrastructure. This position is designed for a technical lead who will oversee FACTS projects across various voltage classes, including distribution, sub-transmission, and transmission levels. You will be responsible for utilizing your expertise to define project requirements, review deliverables, and collaborate with both internal teams and external stakeholders, including owners and OEM resources. Your role will require you to stay updated on safety and regulatory standards such as IEEE, IEC, NEC, NESC, NERC, and ISO/RTO, ensuring that all project aspects meet these critical guidelines. In addition to your technical responsibilities, you will be expected to conduct research to familiarize yourself with non-standard design aspects and convey complex technical information to team members with varying levels of expertise. Leading internal discussions with the owner engineering team will be essential to address technical and project management topics effectively. This hybrid position allows for flexibility, requiring candidates to be located or willing to relocate to any Black & Veatch U.S. Regional Office. Responsibilities

  • Function as a technical lead substation design engineer for FACTS projects involving distribution, sub transmission, and transmission level voltage classes.
  • Utilize resources available for safety and regulatory standards to effectively define project requirements and review project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with owner and OEM resources, including subject matter experts, internal engineering, and project management.
  • Conduct research to locate required white papers, brochures, publications, or standards related to non-standard design aspects.
  • Convey technical information to the project team, including stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Lead internal discussions with the owner engineering team to close out technical or project management topics.
  • Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables and perform complex research for equipment and materials selection.
  • Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements for projects.
  • Actively coordinate with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects.
  • Assist with identifying key client interests and drivers on less complex projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program.
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience in electrical engineering with a focus on STATCOM/FACTS technology.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, power electronics, and control systems.
  • General understanding of civil, site, system studies, settings, and telecommunication design.
  • Experience with regulatory standards (IEC, IEEE, ISO/RTO, NEC, NERC, NESC).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Nice-to-haves

  • PE License
  • Experience with simulation and modeling software such as PSCAD, PSSE, PSLF.
  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards.
