About the position

The Lead Electrical Engineer for Substation Design and Power Electronics at Black & Veatch will function as a technical lead for FACTS projects, focusing on substation design across various voltage classes. This role involves utilizing safety and regulatory standards to define project requirements, reviewing deliverables, and collaborating with various stakeholders. The engineer will also conduct research on non-standard design aspects and communicate technical information effectively to diverse project teams. This position is hybrid, allowing for a balance between remote work and office presence.

Responsibilities

  • Function as a technical lead substation design engineer for FACTS projects.
  • Utilize safety and regulatory standards to define project requirements and review deliverables.
  • Conduct research to locate required white papers, brochures, publications, or standards.
  • Convey technical information to project teams with varying levels of expertise.
  • Lead internal discussions to close out technical or project management topics.
  • Prepare complex engineering deliverables and calculations.
  • Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate with internal and external team members on projects.
  • Assist with identifying key client interests and drivers on projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience in electrical engineering with a focus on STATCOM/FACTS technology.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, power electronics, and control systems.
  • General understanding of civil, site, system studies, settings, and telecommunication design.
  • Experience with regulatory standards (IEC, IEEE, ISO/RTO, NEC, NERC, NESC).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Nice-to-haves

  • PE License
  • Exposure to simulation and modeling software such as PSCAD, PSSE, PSLF, etc.
  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards.
