About the position

The Lead Electrical Engineer for Electrical and Instrumentation is a pivotal role within the organization, responsible for overseeing and supporting the business's electrical and instrumentation engineering needs at the facility. This position entails managing and implementing capital projects and major repairs, ensuring that all engineering efforts align with the facility's operational goals. The engineer will provide day-to-day technical support and serve as a power systems expert within the Utilities Department, contributing to the overall efficiency and safety of the facility's operations. In this role, the engineer will promote and support safety and environmental initiatives at the facility level, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and standards. They will conduct front-end studies on potential capital projects that have significant business impacts, developing and maintaining dynamic capital and major repair plans that adapt to the mill's evolving needs. The engineer will work closely with Engineering and Maintenance teams to implement these projects, emphasizing safety, environmental impact, quality, cost, and schedule adherence. The Lead Electrical Engineer will manage multiple projects concurrently, overseeing all phases from initial concept through to installation and commissioning. This includes evaluating alternatives, estimating costs, scheduling, conducting safety reviews, and ensuring proper documentation. The engineer will also provide expertise in power systems, including design, troubleshooting, and operational support for turbine generators, high-voltage power distribution systems, and various control systems. Additionally, they will mentor junior engineers and interns, fostering a culture of learning and development within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and support all facility level safety and environmental initiatives.
  • Perform front end studies on potential capital projects with high business impacts.
  • Develop and maintain dynamic capital and major repair plans, adjusting to the ever-changing needs of the mill.
  • Support Engineering and Maintenance resources in the implementation of capital and major repair projects with strong emphasis on safety, environmental impact, quality, cost, and schedule.
  • Prioritize and provide oversight to assigned projects completed through Engineering.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently from initial concept to installation and commissioning.
  • Provide power systems expertise and engineering acumen, including design, troubleshooting, and operations support.
  • Assist in troubleshooting efforts to resolve technical problems in the facility.
  • Manage and provide oversight to outside contractors regarding safety, code, technical and commercial requirements.
  • Assist Legal and Purchasing in the development of contractual agreements with vendors.
  • Assist Finance in tax, capital vs. expense, and IRR financial decisions and justifications.
  • Maintain capital asset and engineering documentation.
  • Mentor junior engineers, interns, and co-ops.
  • Ensure compliance to codes and standards in all Maintenance and Engineering efforts.
  • Participate in and lead cross-functional teams.

Requirements

  • 10+ years related experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in pulp and paper, power generation, or other heavy industry.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited college or university.
  • Registered P.E. license and/or PMP certification is a plus.
